For several years in a row now, the Philippines has been battered by big storms which have, sadly, claimed many lives. Once again, the Filipino running community stands united in an effort to raise funds for the victims. Here are five great reasons to join Rescue Run 2012!
Join Rescue Run 2012
One massive storm hit the Philippines last year (Typhoon Sendong) and the Filipino running community organized Rescue Run 2011, a fund-raiser for the victims (also my very first 5k). This year, it’s Typhoon Pablo, necessitating Rescue Run 2012. Whether you’re a runner or not, you should join because…
There’s No Pressure
It’s not a road race. It’s a charity run. Or charity walk. There’s no need to even train as this run isn’t about who will be the fastest on this Sunday but how much assistance we can provide for our fellow Filipinos currently suffering the after-effects of Typhoon Pablo.
It’s the Best-Priced Run for 2012
The minimum ‘registration fee’ as far as I know is only PHP 200.00 (about $5.00) and this a donation in itself already. With many running events in Manila regularly pegged between PHP 600.00 to PHP 900.00, this is a run which virtually anyone can afford while helping out a great cause.
There Will be Guaranteed Fun
The organizers are encouraging runners to come in their best rescue- or Santa-themed attire. While this won’t make for very fast running, this will surely be a welcome change as far as Sunday run events go. I’m personally looking forward to seeing those in big, fat, and bulky Santa outfits!
Registration is a Breeze
There are several registration sites all around Manila, making sure the process is quick and painless. I received my own race kit in under 5 minutes! There are Mizuno branches for the mall-goers especially those from the South, A Runner’s Circle Manila for those living in the central district, and SecondWind branches for those in North Manila.
The Cause is Great… and Necessary
Typhoon Pablo was probably one of the most damaging storms to have hit the Philippines in recent times. It has affected over 6 million people, took the lives of more than 1,000, and caused billions of pesos in infrastructure and agriculture damages. Our countrymen need every little help they can get.
Can the Filipino running community and the Typhoon Pablo victims count you in? Registration for Rescue Run 2012 is only until December 22, 2012 so hurry! Send the organizers an email at greentennial@yahoo.com as well for more information.
